Based on IGN I agree with their reasons.

Before GTA3 it was years of games where you always wanted to go to areas that were restricted. Those magic invisible (or sometimes red) walls or the 2 ft high barrier that your guy inexplicably could not step over.

With GTA3, you could now do nearly everything you wanted. If there was fence, there was a way to get to the other side. If there was a road, you could drive it. If there was a roof, you could snipe from it.

Yes.. it did allow those things, but I don’t consider that influential…

People didn’t come around and say.. OMG GTA removed the invisible wall, what a great idea!!! It just so happened that the technology finally met the demand.

Perhaps you should say that the PS2’s hardware was the influence, not the game itself.

Anyhow, what happens when you go to the outer limits in GTA?
